About us

MHFA is part of Wealden, Eastbourne and Lewes (WEL) Mind's training portfolio. WELmind has been at the forefront of introducing innovative courses from around the world, including:

  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) from LivingWorks, Canada in 2003,
  • safeTALK (a 3hr LivingWorks suicide awareness program) in 2007, and
  • BRIDGES (a peer-led, self help recovery program) from Tennessee in 2008.

MHFA was originally developed in Australia in 2000 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm. Betty Kitchener came to England in 2006 to train MHFA instructors for WELmind. The program went on to be augmented by the National Institute of Mental Health in England (NIMHE) in 2007.

Due to demand outside our area of benefit, WELmind is developing a trading arm enabling us to deliver courses anywhere in England.

Please see our website http://www.welmind.org.uk/ for more information about our services.

The WELmind MHFA Instructor Team

WELmind has some of the most experienced MHFA instructors in England. Our team consists of instructors with a broad base of professional and informal expertise in the field of mental health.

Two of our instructors, Dr Steve Jones and Annie Whelan presented at the National MHFA launch on December 10th 2008.

All instructors registered with us adhere to our commitment to provide the highest standard of training and meet our quality standards as a Local Mind Association. Our instructors are supported in their work, attend development sessions and are covered by public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
